Mid-Antrim bowlers have nothing to ‘Larne’ in Shield win
MID-ANTRIM travelled to Kilwaughter for their Inter-Zone Shield game with Larne on Saturday and returned home victorious by 21 shots.
There were a number of changes from to the original team due to illness and work commitments. In the first series of games the mid Antrim four of Tom Morrison, James McWhirter, Grant Robinson and Wes Caldwell were first on the scoreboard but could not build on that start.
By the half-way stage they trailed by 8–3. They did however stick to the task and limited the damage to 11–8.
On the middle mat the rink of Andy Millar, Jonathan Reid, Stevie shields and Richard Fleming were involved in a very close game which they managed to snatch a well-deserved 7–8 win.
The Mid Antrim four of David Duncan, Michael McMaster, Ivan Craig and William Morrison set off to a great start which saw them lead by 4–8 at the half way stage.
However the home four finished strongly but was unable to haul back the advantage and narrowly lost by 10–11.
After the break the Mid Antrim four of Andy Bonnar, Alister McCullough, Graham Wilson and Andy Morrison were always in charge in their game and ran out comfortable winners by 5–12.
On the centre mat Mid Antrim’s Richard Allen, Alan McCombe, James Gaston and Bryan Magrath started slowly but by the half way stage held a slender 1 shot advantage.
They played the better bowls in the closing ends and ran out very worthy winners by 4–12.
Martin Craig, Richard Rodgers, Matthew Boyd and David Morrison were quickly in charge in their game and by the half- way stage had established a 4–8 lead. They continued to dominate and were leading 4-11 when their opponents conceded the game.
Mid Antrim now travel to Enniskillen to meet Western in the semi-final on January 26.
Congratulations from the Mid-Antrim Zone go to team member William Morrison on his selection to represent Ireland at the “A” series in Dumfries in March.
