Nutts Corner to host Irish GP this weekend

This weekend sees Nutts Corner Race Circuit host the biggest meeting in the Ulster Karting Calendar, a two day event which will see the best kart racers from all over Ireland come together and compete in the prestigious Irish Grand Prix.

Each year the Ulster Karting Club host the event at the County Antrim Circuit and every year is guaranteed to bring some fantastic racing with every driver on the grid hoping to take home the coveted GP Plate.

No doubt some of the best racing this season thus far has been in the Senior Max class with three drivers all still well in contention for the title. Daniel Conlon from Dollingstown, Portadown’s Derek Wilson and Douglas Reid from Ballynahinch have provided some fantastic racing throughout the season and as a result the three are still in with a shot of claiming the 2014 title and, all three will be sure to try and stake their claim for it at this weekend’s Irish GP.

Carrickfergus man Robert Devenney has been the dominant force in the World Formula class this season winning the majority of races giving him a strong lead in this year’s Championship, however there will be plenty of drivers trying to ensure that he doesn’t get it all his own way at the Irish GP. Drivers such as Paul Prentice from Moira, Peter Dornan from Stoneyford, and Neville Bell to name just a few who will try and bring the fight to Devenney this weekend.

In the Cadet class there has been quite a few winners this year and will no doubt be a class to keep an eye on throughout the weekend with Sé Óg Martin, Philip Patton, Shay Burns and Thomas Edgar to name just a few of the young drivers who will all be on a mission to take home the GP Plate.

The Mini Max class will also be class to watch come this weekend with young drivers such as Jack McGaughey from Glenavy, Hillsborough’s Daniel Harper and Sam McDonnell from Coleraine all having won this year thus far and will all no doubt be out to take home the victory in what will certainly be a close contest.

The gearbox classes will also be on show this weekend with both the 125cc and 250cc Superkarts also taking to the Nutts Corner circuit to put on yet another tremendous show for the spectators in Karts capable of doing over 120mph. Noel Brennan has been the man to beat in the 125cc class this year with Gilford man Matthew McGaffin and James Irvine from Carrickfergus will be hoping to bring the fight to Brennan come this weekend.

In the ever competitive Division 1 250cc class there are a selection of riders who could take home victory including 2013 Champion and Irish GP Winner Liam Fox, Richard Dewart from Waringstown and Comber man Stuart Coey o name just a few who could potentially take home the victory.

This weekend will be one certainly not to missed and is certain to be a fantastic days racing. It is a two day event which runs on both Saturday, August 23 and Sunday 24 with Qualifying and the Heats taking place on Saturday and the main Finals taking place on Sunday so if you would like to spend a family fun day out and enjoy some entertaining and close racing Nutts Corner is the place to be this weekend.
