ALGERIAN athlete Taoufik Makhloufi, who was one of a team of Olympic athletes who came to Antrim to train ahead of the London Games, is the proud owner of an Olympic gold medal after winning the men’s 1500m title.

During their two week training camp the team of eight athletes, which make up some of the world’s greatest middle distance runners and represented the countries of Oman, Qatar, Egypt, Algeria and Djibouti trained at Antrim Stadium. They made good use of many of the other facilities within Antrim Forum, including the Fitness Suite and Spa.

They also enjoyed many of Antrim’s scenic walking routes including Lough Shore Park, Rea’s Wood and Antrim Castle Gardens.

Mayor of Antrim, Councillor Roy Thompson said: “I was delighted when Taoufik crossed the finish line and won the gold medal.

“It was a privilege to have him and the rest of the team here in our Borough to train ahead of the Games. I met with the team on many occasions during their camp and I know they were very impressed with the training facilities on offer. Knowing that these athletes left Antrim feeling prepared and ready for the Games is a huge testament to the excellent facilities and warm hospitality on offer right here in the Borough.

“I would like to thank Athletics NI, Sport NI and DCAL for their support during the camp.”

Alderman Sam Dunlop, who is also a volunteer on the Antrim Welcome Host Committee which was set up to raise the profile of the Games in Antrim echoed these sentiments, he said: “It’s a great achievement for Taoufik to win a gold medal. The 2012 Games have certainly captured our imaginations and will hopefully leave a long lasting legacy for our young people.

“You never know, we may even have a potential Olympic champion living within the Borough.”
