THE Oriel Gallery in Antrim Castle Gardens is currently playing host to a beautiful collection of portraits by John B Yeats.

This delightful exhibition features portraits by the artist who was born in County Down.

Creativity certainly ran in the family as he is also the father of William Butler Yeats, Ireland’s most famous poet and Jack Butler Yeats, the painter and illustrator who holds the title of Ireland’s most famous and most expensive artist.

Educated in Trinity College Dublin, John B Yeats began his career as a lawyer before taking up painting.

In 1867, he ended his career as a barrister to pursue his life-long interest in drawing at Heatherley’s Art School in London.

The portraits which feature in the exhibition are mostly executed in pencil.

They have as their subjects, many important figures from early twentieth century literary and political circles including John O’Leary, Lady Augusta Gregory and Douglas Hyde.

Each and every one beautifully captures the individuality and personality of the sitter.

Cathy Brown, Arts Office with Antrim Borough Council said: “It is a real coup for us to have work of this stature on show in the Oriel Gallery.

“This exhibition is presented in collaboration with The Model, home of The Niland Collection in Sligo.”

Visitors have been flocking to the exhibition which continues until March 30.
