A big win for St Comgall's PS girls

ST COMGALL'S PS girls came out tops in the SW Antrim Cumann na mbunscoil Girls indoor five-a-side football competition held at St Patrick's College, Ballymena on January 29.

The girls didn’t drop a point in their first round matches in Group B against St Colmcille’s B’mena, St Joseph’s Crumlin and St Oliver Plunkett’s Toome.

The competition was strong from all the schools, with the mighty Toome team making it a close run.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Antrim team St Joseph’s PS battled it out in Group A against St Brigid’s Ballymena, St Mary’s Cargan and Mount St Michael’s Randalstown.

St Joseph’s narrowly missed out getting through to the semi-finals, in the end just put out by St Mary’s and Mount St Michael's.

Alicia McAuley from St Joseph’s had an outstanding day along with her team mates; Georgia Gormley, Ciara McDonnell, and Jenny Campbell.

In the semi-final, St Comgall’s had a straight forward win over St Mary’s who had a number of their older girls away on a school trip, we look forward to seeing these girls back next year.

The other semi-final match between St Oliver Plunkett’s and Mount St Michael’s was possibly the best match of the tournament, it was closely fought and even after extra time it was still a draw.

Penalty shoot -outs settled the outcome and Mount St Michael’s went on to met St Comgall’s in the final.

Outstanding shooting from Niamh Callan and Niamh Quinn sealed the day for the St Comgall’s girls, who were the victors with a score of three goals to one.

This is the first time St Comgall's PS have entered a girls' football competition; what a start!

Congratulations to teacher/coach Terry McCann. These girls also train, together with the St Joseph’s girls, at the local St Comgall's GAA club with coaches Mairead McAuley, Paddy Ball and Declan O’Hara.

The school will now represent SW Antrim schools at the county finals in the next months. The team on the day were, Caitlin Ball, Niamh and Caitlin Callan, Paige Lindsey, Mary Shannon, Eimer O’Hara, Fiona Poulter (goalie who only let two past her all day), Niamh McLaughlin and Niamh Quinn (captain).
