ANTRIM Borough Council has been delighted to support the best young athletes from all over the north-east of the Province in the Northern Bank Future Champions Sports Academy which took place recently.
The young people from P7, Year 8 and Year 9 got the opportunity to show off their talents at a series of championship events held at some of the best venues in Northern Ireland.

Janine Harvey, Sports Development Officer with Antrim Borough Counc
il, said: "The Northern Bank Future Champions Sports Academy has been developed by Sport North East (SNE) to develop the talents of local young people in their chosen sport and gives the cream of the crop the opportunity to shine. There are nine sports to choose from including athletics, badminton, camogie, rugby, squash and hockey.

"The programme consists of three stages - a talent search, six elite coaching sessions and finally the Junior Championships which were held from May 27 to June 4. This gave the young athletes an opportunity to showcase the skills and talents they had learnt from the training sessions, in a competitive environment."

Antrim hosted the Badminton Junior Championship and the event was keenly fought as expected.

Roger Jackson branch manager for Northern Bank in Antrim, added: "We are delighted to be involved in a programme which brings talented young athletes from all aspects of our community together in such a positive way."

David Smyth, chairman of SNE, said: "This programme gives the most talented athletes the opportunity to shine. We want to thank the Northern Bank for their support in this programme without which it wouldn’t be the success that it obviously is."
