CHIMNEY Corner under-11s are the new holders of the Rosebowl Trophy following a fine 2-1 win over Carnmoney in the final at Monkstown last Tuesday evening.
The young Antrim based side went into the decider as favourites as in the three previous meeting between the sides this season, they have came out on top in all of them, but the Carnmoney side were not going to let their opponents just walk away with
the trophy, and from the kick-off they showed them that they were in for a battle.
Ciaran Dobbin, who has been in spectacular form all season, knocking in goals for fun in most of the games had a half chance to put the Randalstown Road side in front as early as the fourth minute but his shot was well saved by the ‘Money’ keeper, and again four minutes later the young keeper denied Dobbin again by pulling out a fantastic save when the Randalstown lad was clean through on goal.
The Carnmoney side also were creating chances but the ever dependable backline of Hogg, Connolly, Garthwaite and Mc Ivor were solid and were able to avert most of the danger that was put their way, but on the very odd occasion that their defences were breached, Aodhan Tolan was in splendid form between the sticks for The Corner side to keep the teams on level par.
No matter what Corner tried during the first half that elusive opening goal just would come, as Michael Tolan, Tyler Hogg and Ben Kerr all had shots either well saved, went over the bar or deflected wide and both sides went into the half time team talk scoreless.
The Antrim coaches made a change at half time when they introduced Ryan O’ Dea into the middle of the park to try and give a bit a strength to that area and it worked as they started to take control from the midfield and over the first ten minutes of the second period they were very unlucky not to score at least three goals as Ben Kerr’s strike on 35mins was parried wide by the keeper, O’ Dea’s header was cleared off the line on 37 and the Carnmoney keeper pulled off what would be one of the saves of the season to deny Dobbin on 39 mins.
The Allen Park side continued to push forward and they were rewarded for their sheer determination with 44 minutes on the clock when Ben Kerr scored one of his now trade mark screamers from outside the box to take them into a well deserved lead.
Michael Tolan came close to doubling the advantage three minutes later, but the young Carnmoney keeper, who was in fantastic form throughout the entire game saved well, but the match was as good as over as a contest with 51 minutes gone, when Dobbin, picked the ball up close the halfway line, ran through the defence and slotted it into the bottom corner of the net to take his goal scoring tally to 35 for the season, not bad for a player who only moved into a striker position after Christmas.
The Carnmoney side scored a consolation goal with a couple of minutes of play left but the young Antrim side hung onto to the final whistle to collect their first trophy in their first season together as a team.
