Town improvements plan meeting - Clarke urges residents to attend

A RANDALSTOWN councillor has voiced fears that improvement works planned for the town could have more far-reaching consequences.

As the Times reported last week, a public meeting is to be held in Truffles Restaurant next Thursday, March 21 at 6.30pm.

As part of Antrim Borough Council’s Masterplan for the town, a first phase of improvements has already been made to the south end of Main Street including resurfacing the footpaths and roadway and removal of overhead cabling and poles.

It is now proposed to complete the full scheme by carrying out similar works along the remainder of Main Street, taking in Moore’s Lane and New Street.

But DUP councillor and MLA Trevor Clarke said it is important local people have their say.

“I think we would all love to see a high quality scheme for the town,” Cllr. Clarke said.

He added: “ But we have to ask at what cost will it be for local businesses.

“In the current economic climate, it’s difficult enough so I can understand local businesses’ fears over the impact the disruption these works would have.

“We all know how congested the town was when the water pipes were being laid and that project overran.

“We could potentially face months of further disruption so it’s important people come out and have their say.”

A survey on the proposed works is currently being carried out in the town by the Council, Department for Social Development and DRD Roads Service and the results will be presented at the public meeting.

There will also be an opportunity for those attending to discuss the detail of the proposals with officials from DSD and DRD Roads Service.

The decision to progress with the work is subject to the outcome of the public consultation process.
