Toome project applies for funds

A PROJECT to refurbish the Quay wall in Toome is looking to benefit from using potential Dereliction Intervention Funding.

The intervention funding initiative is run by the Department of Environment and is used to address areas where dereliction is an increasing issue.

It was confirmed at last Tuesday’s meeting of Antrim Council’s Development and Leisure Committee that one local expression of interest has come forward from the Toome Initiative Group’s aim to refurbish the Quay Wall.

There is specific criteria that must be met including benefits to tourism and contribution to regeneration and tackling the social need.

Also, any projects that are to be considered for funding in the current year, must be capable of completion and all grant aid spent by March 31, 2013.

Councillor for the area, Henry Cushinan, said that the wall is important because it is the first thing you see in that area.

He said: “This is the first sight of Antrim Borough and we are hopeful that it fits the criteria.”
