AN Antrim chippy is in the running to be crowned regional Independent Takeaway of the Year at the 25th National Fish and Chip Awards 2013.

The Chippy in Railway Street is one of five fish and chip shops in Northern Ireland shortlisted for the prestigious title.

This latest success for the local chip shop follows on from news last month that The Chippy had scooped the prestigious Fish and Chip Quality Award.

“We are absolutely delighted to be shortlisted,” Joanna Graham, from The Chippy, said.

She added: “This is a great achievement for us and we are very excited indeed.

“Thank you to our customers and supporters and with their help we know we can win!”

In October, the competion organisers, Seafishs will announce one winner from the shortlisted top five shops in Northern Ireland.

Over the next few months, the local chippies will have to excel if they are to secure the title, as they will be put to the test in a round of secret mystery judging by the Seafish panel.

The judges will scour the country to secretly rate the shops in a number of factors, from food quality to customer service, that businesses must meet in order to progress to the next round of the competition.

Paul Williams, chief executive of Seafish, said: “Every year of this competition we see the standard of shops getting higher and higher and Northern Ireland is no exception.

“Seafish has been running the awards for 25 years and the calibre of entries demonstrates the battle for the national title is as fierce as ever.”

The competition will conclude with a glitzy evening awards ceremony at The Lancaster Hotel in London on January 24, 2013.
