Ritchie concern at rising cost of living
A LOCAL councillor has called on the Executive to mitigate the impact of the rising cost of living.
UUp Alderman Drew Ritchie said the matter is currently being considered by the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee who are taking evidence from the Consumer Council .
“It is clear that the Executive must do all in its power to mitigate the rising costs of living in terms of food and energy prices, car insurance and the cost of fuel,” Ald. Ritchie said.
He added: “There are practical steps which can be taken including fast tracking the publication of a Financial Capabilities Strategy, lobbying the Westminster government to take action on Northern Ireland’s high petrol and diesel prices and targeting the elimination of fuel poverty.’
“The Consumer Council has conducted research on the cost of living which shows that nearly half (47%) of consumers are concerned about their ability to make ends meet, over 90% are paying more than they were two years ago for petrol and diesel and 87% are worried about the cost of food.
“Allied to the fact that car insurance is markedly higher in Northern Ireland and the cost of gas and oil has increased significantly it is clear that the Executive needs to deliver.’
“The rising cost of food is a particular worry with the Consumer Council commissioning Ipsos MORI to carry out a survey across 1,016 households as well as focus groups, online surveys and meetings with food industry representatives.
“This research concluded that the cost of food and grocery shopping is a major concern for the vast majority of people and shopping behaviour has changed as a result.
“In order to combat this, I support the recommendations put forward by the Consumer Council in relation to food prices, pricing policies and the balance of special offers.’’
