THE Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service is reminding anyone interested in applying to become a Retained (part-time) Firefighter that the closing date for receipt of applications is Friday, March 8 at 3pm.

The NIFRS major recruitment drive for Retained (part-time) Firefighters in 37 Retained Fire Stations across Northern Ireland is now well underway and lots of people have already expressed an interest in becoming a Retained Firefighter to help protect their local community.

Eleven fire stations across Northern Area Command, including Antrim, are now recruiting for Retained Firefighters.

Applicants need to live and work within a five minutes radius of their local Retained Fire Station that is recruiting and NIFRS is encouraging more females and those from ethnic minority backgrounds to apply.

Retained Firefighters respond to emergency incidents including fires, road traffic collisions and other specialist service calls such as chemical spills, collapsed buildings and other types of rescues.

They also play a crucial role in providing safety advice and assistance in their local community.

Chris Kerr, Chief Fire Officer with the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, said: “It is an extremely rewarding and interesting job and Retained Firefighters must be able to quickly respond to emergency call outs by making their way to their local Fire Station within five minutes.

“Retained Firefighters are paid an attractive monthly retaining fee, plus drill night attendance, emergency call out fees, as well as annual holiday leave.

“I would encourage anyone who is interested in helping to protect their local community to apply now – there is still time.”

NIFRS is an equal opportunities employer and looks forward to receiving applications from men and women from all sections of the community who are interested in becoming a Retained Firefighter in their area.

Application packs are available at different locations around the local town and can be downloaded from NIFRS website www.nifrs.org
