LOCAL pet owners who might be thinking of weeding their garden have been warned of the dangers that most weed killers pose to dogs and pets.

Firmount Vets, Antrim posted a warning on their Facebook page after a dog had to be put to sleep after suffering ingesting weed killer.

Paraquat is a common ingredient in many weed killers and is fatal to dogs when ingested before it has dried. They warned that as little as 2ml can cause a death of “vomiting and respiratory distress” and very little can be done.

On their Facebook page they posted: “Only this week we witnessed the suffering of a much loved family dog, euthanasia was the only option and only by raising awareness can we prevent such a sad outcome again. Please read instructions on all packaging carefully.”

Firmount vet, Mr Brian McAuley told the Antrim Times to ensure that any weed killer has dried before letting a dog near the grass.

He said: “Some of the weed killers can be very harmful to pets but Paraquat is by far the most dangerous and it can be very dangerous with regards to pets. If it is in liquid form and dogs lick it, this destroys the dog’s lungs.

“I recommend that you ensure your pet stays away from treated grass for at least 24 hours, if it has been sprayed making sure that the weed killer is still not damp and it has dried in.”
