OLYMPIC fever was evident in Randalstown last week when our work experience reporter Victoria Hutchinson visited the town.

Speaking to local people just days before the event came to a close, Victoria asked if people had got into the Olympic spirit and if so, what was their favourite part.

Willie Anderson said his favourite event during the Olympics was the sailing.

A sailing enthusiast, Willie said: “For me, the best event has to be the sailing, as I am a sailing man myself.

“I have competed in quite a few races at the North coast and take my boat out on Lough Neagh quite often.

“My favourite althete was Sailor Ben Ainslie and runner Mo Farrah.”

Shannon Graham and Annemarie Quinn both said running was their favourite sport, with Usain Bolt their favourite althete - something four-year-old Ben Millar agreed with.

A few residents thought the boxing stood out, particularly the efforts of Irish Olympic Gold winner Katie Taylor.

Peter McCollum said: “I am enjoying the boxing, it’s good to see Ireland winning gold. My favourites would have to be Mo Farrah and Irish Boxer Luke Campbell.”

Daena Lipsett was in agreement about the boxing and said: “I love the boxer Katie Taylor. It’s great to see Irish women winning gold, especially for such a contact sport.”

While three people our reporter spoke to hadn’t watched the Olympics at all, Karen Pickerton said she enjoyed the swimming.

“I watched the swimming and diving and Tom Daley has stood out the most in my opinion,” Karen said.

Along with Times photographer John McIlwaine, Victoria was able to persuade a few local residents to pay tribute to the fastest man on Earth, Usain Bolt and his iconic stance when he won Gold and some of them are pictured here.

Not to be outdown, local Councillor Neil Kelly posted a picture of his dog Molly doing her best impression of Usain Bolt!
