MP urges community to ‘fully engage’ with waste plant consultation
SOUTH Antrim MP has urged the local community to “fully engage” with a planned consultation into proposals for an energy from waste and recycling plant at Mallusk.
William McCrea said that while he had received briefing on behalf of Becon Consortium regarding their plans, he said it is of “vital importance” that the council, community organisations and elected representatives “carefully consider the impact of such a plant”.
“I am aware of concerns already being expressed by local residents in respect to the visual impact, smell, and traffic management issues,” Mr McCrea said.
He added: “I encourage the local community to be fully engaged during the public consultation period so as to ensure their views are taken on board by all the relevant authorities.
“This proposal is partly proposed by arc21, an umbrella waste management organisation for 11 councils in the east of the Province.
“I am fully aware that Northern Ireland must meet its obligations under EU targets and that the landfill solutions of the past are no longer acceptable.
“In the final analysis the Minister for the Environment will have to make the final determination, but the issues raised by the community must not simply be passed over, but must be accredited with in-depth investigation and consideration.”
