MLA calls for change of attitude over Templepatrick expansion plan

A LOCAL Assemblyman has called for a more constructive attitude over expansion plans at the Twelfth Milestone in Templepatrick.

Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kinahan has called for planning authorities and politicians involved in the proposed expansion of the complex to take a “more constructive attitude”.

The plans involve adding a new car wash to the petrol station and shopping complex.

He criticised the “divisive and unnecessary direction” which the dispute had taken, after the intervention of “politicians who have no real connection to Templepatrick”.

He said: “The Twelfth Milestone is an extremely successful small shopping complex based around the filling station.

“It provides basic local services almost 24 hours a day and provides a welcome stopping point for those on their way to and from the International Airport.

“At a time when we need every possible form of investment, commerce and employment it is simply daft to adopt the ‘Ulster Says No’ stance.”

However, he acknowledged that the views of residents in the area had to be taken into account, adding: “We need to engage with the whole of the local community and assess their views.”

Mr Kinahan criticised what he sees as a lack of focus on their jobs from relevant parties.

The most problematic issue is that of proposed changes to roads, and the main road through towards the airport in particular.

He said: “Local politicians need to be at the forefront of helping to resolve the roads issue and ensuring that any change is something we all can live with.

“Too often, pettiness and lack of leadership along with the inability to think matters through properly result in us ending up with a solution which suits nobody.

“It is actually their job to think through the implications of such changes and ensure that the end result benefits the whole community.”
