Marathon man-ager runs for team IKEA

ANTRIM man Peter McMeekin has completed his fourth marathon after running the London Marathon in 4 hours 8 minutes, with Team IKEA in aid of worldwide charity, UNICEF.

Peter, who is the Goods Flow Manager at IKEA Belfast and has been with the Belfast store since it opened in 2007, was selected to be part of a UK IKEA team who reached the finish line after running in support of various worldwide charities.

IKEA donated a fantastic £1,000 towards Peter’s marathon mission, meaning he raised a total of £3,500.

The monies raised will go towards UNICEF’s work as the largest distributor of vaccines to the developing world, protecting children from potentially deadly but preventable diseases.

Peter’s fundraising will also help towards funding for further mosquito nets, on top of the 90 million already distributed by the charity over the last five years.

Speaking about his London Marathon experience with IKEA, Peter said: “This was my fourth, and, without doubt, my best marathon. It was fantastic to run with the rest of the IKEA team, whom I met before we set off around the marathon route which inspired and motivated us the whole way around. Live bands, dancers, Jamaican drums and even a 40 piece orchestra helped dissolve any pain or exhaustion!

“My experience is just a small part of it, to be able to help a charity such as UNICEF with such support from IKEA Belfast is just superb. Thinking of the great work charity is doing kept me moving!”

The London Marathon isn’t the only charitable venture Peter has embarked on, he recently held a coffee morning with Raymond Brown who works in the Replenishment Department at IKEA Belfast, raising £850 in just two hours and he also took part in the Treadmill Challenge, running over 54k at the Belfast store alongside other co-workers.
