A LOCAL woman who celebrated her 101st birthday last week says her “new target” is reaching 105.

Mrs Sadie Bain, a tenant at Clanmil Housing’s Allen Court independent living scheme in Antrim, celebrated the milestone birthday last week with friends and neighbours living at the scheme.

Born in Omagh on August 5 1911, Mrs Bain moved to Antrim when she was three years old.

She was the middle child of five and attended Massereene Primary School in Antrim and Millars Academy in Ballymena.

She married in 1932 and had two children, Noel and Muriel, and is now proud grandmother to five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

This year, she received a silver coin of the Presidential seal and letter from President of Ireland, Micheal D Higgins.

Speaking to the Times, Mrs Bain commented that “reaching 105 is my new target”.

Thanking everyone for her birthday celebrations she joked: “Thank you all for coming but, I’m going abroad for my next birthday, so I’m sorry I won’t be here.”

Mrs Bain puts her long life down to genetics and a healthy lifestyle.

She said: “I think I have my parents to thank. It’s in the genes!

“As well as that, my mother always gave us good home made food when we were growing up and I’ve always kept active.

“I played tennis, darts and bowls when I was younger and I still like watching sport on the television.”

Mrs Bain worked in Antrim Library from the 1950s until she retired in 1977 following which she volunteered in the Citizens Advice Bureau in Antrim for 12 years.

During this time she was responsible for opening Antrim’s first tourist information office in Pogue’s Entry.

Sadie became a member of the Royal British Legion in 1947. She has been President of the British Legion Woman’s Section in Antrim and received the highest award available in theWomen’s Section, a Golden Award, last May.

Allen Court is a housing scheme for people over 60 that provides tenants with the support they need to stay in a home of their own as they grow older, offering independence, companionship, an active lifestyle and security in 35 self-contained apartments.
