Further calls for Antrim Museum
THERE have been renewed calls for Antrim to finally get its very own dedicated formal museum.
Speaking at last Thursday’s Development and Leisure Committee meeting, Councillor Adrian Watson said it is about time the borough had a dedicated museum.
Former Mayor Antrim Councillor Adrian Watson called for a formal museum for the Borough, he said: “I would to see Antrim get its own museum, local man Gary Campbell has an incredible collection of war memorabilia.
“He has been offered a location in Cookstown, but he is local and it would be much better to keep this collection in Antrim.
“We don’t have a formal museum and now is the time, the collection is unrivalled and quite possibly worth millions of pounds.”
Assistant Director of Development and Leisure Paul Kelly, told members that the council had already spoken to Mr Campbell, he said: “Gary Campbell was given a tour of Steeple House three weeks ago, it was left that he would come back to the officers.”
However Cllr Watson replied: “With respect, you are wasting this man’s time. It’s not realistic to ask him to pay this money for the location. Can we have this issue on the agenda for next month?”
Councillor Drew Ritchie agreed and speaking about Mr Campbell’s collection said: “We have a treasure chest on our doorstep.”
