Disappointment over Sports Personality of the Year ‘snub’ to council

A LOCAL councillor has voiced his disappointment at an apparent “snub” by the BBC in not inviting any Antrim representative to their Sports Personality of the Year awards show.

The annual event took place last Sunday night with Tour De France and Olympic champion cyclist Bradley Wiggins taking home the title.

At last Tuesday morning’s meeting of Antrim Council’s Development and Leisure committee, Alderman Drew Ritchie asked whether anyone from the council had been invited to the award ceremony.

It was confirmed that nobody from the council had received an invite to the event, which had an audience of 16,000 in the ExCel centre.

Ald. Ritchie told members that he was very disappointed with this news considering the borough hosted a number of Olympic and Paralympic teams prior to the London 2012 games.

He said: “All the work that Antrim Borough Council did during the summer should have been recognised. It is very disappointing.”
