THE Northern Health and Social Care Trust recently welcomed a delegation from the Danish Patient Safety Society on a visit to Holywell Hospital.

The Danish Patient Safety Society is a non-profit organisation, which aims to ensure that patient safety aspects are a part of all decisions made in Danish health care.

The delegation which visited Northern Ireland consists of representatives from a wide range of stakeholders in Danish health care: health care professionals, patient and research organizations, pharmaceutical and medical device industry, hospital owners and Local Government in Denmark.

The visit was facilitated by the HSC Safety Forum as part of a study tour of mental health facilities in Northern Ireland. The study tour was arranged to allow the delegation to view best practice in relation to quality and safety improvement in Mental Health.

The Northern Trust has attracted international attention through its collaborative work with the five other HSC Trusts in Northern Ireland and in developing cutting edge patient safety initiatives.

Following the collaboration the Northern Trust has improved their mental health services and put in place quality standards. These quality standards cover evidencing patient participation in their care planning, evidencing of weekly multidisciplinary meetings and evidencing of managing risk.

These standards have demonstrated a quality improvement for patients and can be measured both in quantitative and qualitative measurement.

During the visit to Holywell, the Danish delegates attended presentations on various areas of the mental health services provided by the Northern Trust and visited several inpatient wards.

Noelle Barton, Assistant Director for Mental Health Services, said: “We were delighted to welcome colleagues from a different mental system as it is very beneficial to share our experiences of improving patient safety and to learn from them about examples of good practice within the Danish Health care System.”
