Antrim duo’s Cuba trek raises £9,278 for Alzheimer’s Society
WELL done to Naomi Carey and Janet Montgomery from Massereene Manor Private Nursing Home in Antrim who participated in the Alzheimer’s Society Cuba Bike Ride Challenge.
The girls were part of a group from around the UK who cycled a gruelling 240 miles in just over six days.
The ride was a real cultural experience and also the second challenge the pair had completed for the Alzheimer’s Society. They had participated initially in the Vietnam to Cambodia bike ride challenge in 2008.
They raised around £10,000 from a number of fundraising efforts and personal donations and are very pleased that a large sum will go towards the work of Alzheimer’s Society here in Antrim.
Janet and Naomi would like to thank everyone who supported them particularly the Antrim Borough Council, the Antrim Rotary Club, the Antrim Lions Club and not forgetting the support of all their family and friends.
Barry Smyth, the Locality Manager from Alzheimer’s Society explained that the money has helped to set up a new befriending pilot service for people in the early stages of dementia living in the Antrim area and has been used to develop a friendship group that meets twice a month and it is hoped this will benefit more people affected by the illness.
If you would like more information on the Friendship Group please contact Dawn Beckett on 94 461717 or email dawn.beckett@alzheimers.org.uk.
