Antrim Cadet at home on the range
KEEN eyes and steady nerves paid off for sharp-shooting Antrim Cadet Sergeant Sam Maybin at the annual Inter-Service Cadet Rifle Meeting at Magilligan in County Londonderry last weekend.
Sam who currently serves as Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for the County of Antrim led his team to victory, claiming The Champion Unity Trophy, one of the most prestigious prizes in a tournament which is one of the most hotly contested events in the Cadet sporting calendar, attracting strong entries from right across Northern Ireland.
Congratulating all those who stepped up to the mark to test their skills Colonel Johnny Rollins MBE, Chief Executive of the Reserve Forces & Cadets Association Northern Ireland, said: “Rifle shooting is one of the most popular activities we offer within the Cadet movement with the result that we have large numbers of young people who have both the enthusiasm and the necessary skill to compete at this demanding level... so it really was a case of ‘shooting doesn’t get much tougher than this.
“We have some excellent marksmen and women amongst our competitors, all showing the talent, discipline and control which are needed for success in this sport. It was good to see the results of hard work and regular practice and, what was just as impressive, was the spirit of sportsmanship which the young people demonstrated.”
