The TUV have hit out at the DUP challenging them to come clean on the issue regarding the future of Rosedale Nursing Home.
They were responding to the news revealed in last week’s Times that Antrim Borough Council are to facilitate a petition to fight for the survival of the Care Home.
Antrim TUV spokesman, Richard Cairns said: “Rosedale, like many other Residential Care Homes within the Northern Trust area, have been the subject of a deliberate and calculated campaign designed to result in closure.
“This is being done by the back door by starving them of new admissions then bemoaning the fact that they are not operating at full capacity and thus appearing to be unsustainable. Since 2011/2012 Rosedale have only admitted two permanent residents.”
Local councillors visited the residential home recently and in the wake of their visit calls were made at the recent monthly meeting to ensure they do all in its power to prevent any closure of the facility.
Under the Transforming Your Care government health consultation, health trusts had set out plans to close residential homes but Health Minister Edwin Poots was forced to do a u-turn on the emotive issue.
“While I welcome that the parties on Antrim Borough Council are offering a united front it is somewhat ironic that the DUP have not acknowledged the complicity of their minister Poots in the closure campaign. The Minister has sought to blame the Health Trusts when it is, and continues to be, ministerial policy that is driving the campaign for closure,” added Cairns.
“TUV have two points that everyone should be aware of: 1. Minister Poots had prior knowledge of the Northern Trust’s plan to close 100% of its homes, including Rosedale. He did not intervene and allowed the decision to be made. He only intervened when the public furore over home closures was irresistible. 2. It is the Trust and department’s moratorium on new admissions which continues to implement their strategy for closure. Unless and until new admissions are permitted these homes will continue to be closed by stealth and so called consultations will be mere window-dressing.
“I, therefore, call on the DUP and everyone interested in saving Rosedale to pressurise Minister Poots to reverse the ban on new admissions. Yes, it is time to put the needs of Rosedale and other homes above political ideology and loyalties. I trust the petition will be successful in thwarting the plan of the Health Minister and the Northern Trust to close it.”
