Greystone Library celebrated turning 40 last week with a community birthday party, where locals were able to come along and meet past and current members of staff.

The library opened in May 1974 and Anne Crawford, the original Branch Librarian was an honoured guest, along wiht children from Greystone and St Joseph’s Primary Schools who were entertained with a special storytime.

Michael Lynn, Area Manager with Libraries NI, said: “I am delighted that Greystone Library has reached this fabulous milestone.

“The library has gone through many changes since it first opened and it is great that the building is valued by the local community just as much now as what it was then.”

Greystone Library was one of the first in Northern Ireland to be located in a shopping complex in a residential area.

It was intended the library would serve the needs of 7,000 people in the surrounding area, and it would also act as a mobile library centre for the other suburbs of the town and adjacent countryside.

The library continues to play an active role in the community with a range of events and customer focused services.

These include Rhythm & Rhyme, Storytime, Adult Reading group, Knit and Natter, Tea and Newspapers club and Got IT? sessions.
