Antrim police are stressing the importance of locking parked cars following a number of thefts from cars in recent days.

The majority of these vehicles had been left unlocked in the Inishgarry Park and Meadowlands areas.

Police believe that an opportunistic thief has tried car handles and stolen cash and personal items that have been left inside.

Five thefts from cars were reported over Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14 and police want the help of the community in making sure that the number does not rise.

Police say that always locking parked cars will frustrate thieves, who usually go for the easiest criminal option.

Also, police advise that valuable items, like sat navs, phones or cash should never be left inside cars. Simple crime prevention measures such as these can have a positive impact on communities as a whole.

If anyone has any information on the thefts, please contact Antrim police on the new non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
