South Antrim DUP MLA Pam Cameron has welcomed an announcement by Full Circle Power that their proposal is a viable alternative to the ARC21 Hightown incinerator development.
Mrs Cameron, who is the Assembly Environment Committee Deputy Chair, said: “Clearly the proposed ARC21 development is neither acceptable to the area’s residents nor necessary as permission has already been granted for the plant in Belfast.
“The Full Circle Power development at Bombardier has the capacity to deal with all the domestic and commercial waste we produce in Northern Ireland.”
Mrs Cameron added: “With numerous landfill sites close to reaching full capacity and ratepayers bearing the brunt of increased waste disposal costs, we urgently need to find a more environmentally friendly way to manage the waste we produce that cannot be recycled.
“The proposed site at Hightown is largely opposed by residents on environmental and infrastructure grounds and I see no reason for ARC21 to proceed when a perfectly sound alternative has already been approved.”
