Antrim Show set to shine at Shane’s Castle

The 108th Annual Show of Antrim Agricultural Society will be held on Saturday, July 26 set in the beautiful green grounds of Shane’s Castle Estate.

Entries are now open and the Schedule and Entry Forms are available online at antrimshow.com

Show Secretary Patricia Pedlow said: “In 2013, we had a glorious day, well supported family event, attracting 6,000 spectators and exhibitors.

“We intend reaching these goals this year again by promoting a good family day out in the historic and scenic Shane’s Castle.”

This year the cattle section will continue to run the McLarnon Feeds/NISA Dairy Cow Championship and also the Danske Bank Champion Dairy Cow or Heifer.

As usual the Ayrshire classes will have a strong representation of the full spectrum of the breed. Other classes represented include Holstein, Jersey and as per previous years, the Young Handler and Junior Handler Competition will take place.

This year, the First Trust Bank will sponsor the Supreme Pedigree Beef Championships. Other classes on offer include Hereford, Charolais, Simmental, Aberdeen Angus, British Blonde, British Blue, Beef Shorthorn, Dexter, Irish Moiled, Belted Galloway and Young Handler Competition. A number of classes feature qualifiers and collect points for wider national competitions.

New for 2014, Antrim Show will host the Northern Ireland Limousin Championships, sponsored by the NI Limousin Cattle Club and the Bank of Ireland. Entries for these classes are expected to be high therefore, judging for Limousin’s will commence at 9am.

Antrim Show is renowned for the turnout of sheep attracting the top sheep in the province across all breeds. This year will again play host to the livestock finals including the Danske Bank Champion of Champions and the Danske Bank/NISA Sheep Championship.

Two qualifiers from nine other Shows will qualify for the Fane Valley Stores Shearling Ewe Championship, with the finale being held at Antrim Show.

Other categories include Group and Pairs Championship, Young Sheep Handler, Blackface, Lanark, Border Leicester, Crossbred, Texel, Blue Faced Leicester, Ile De France, Dorset Horn and Poll Dorset, Kerry Hill, Mules, Charollais, Rouge De L’Quest, Beltex, Lleyn, Zwartables, Swaledales, Hampshire Down and Rare Breeds.

There will also be classes for pedigree and Non Pedigree Goats and 8 classes for Pigs.

Closing date for livestock entries is June 30 and schedules are available to download from the website.

Antrim show is a major event in the local equestrian calendar with a full programme of events.

As always, on-field entries in all the horse and pony classes will be taken on the day of the Show.

Organisers are particularly looking forward to the show jumping classes which will be really exciting with the usual generous prize fund.

Antrim is a qualifying show for the A N Irwin & Sons/NISA Championships 2014. There will be classes for Heavy Horses, Showing Horses and Ponies, Non Thoroughbreds, Thoroughbreds, Irish Draught Horses, Hunters, Cobs, Coloured Horses, Racehorse to Riding Horse, Shetland Pony Classes, Family Pony Classes, In-Hand and Ridden Pony Classes, Show Hunter Pony Classes and Mountain & Moorland Classes.

Shane’s Castle has enough space to allow organisers to feature a full range of equestrian events and exhibits. This year will see the continued expansion of show-jumping events with another strong prize fund of £1,000 which should lead to increased competition and a high standard of jumping.

Judges appointed for this year have been picked for their supreme knowledge in their appointed areas, including our own expertise from Northern Ireland and judges from Scotland, England and the South of Ireland.

The Horticulture and Home Industries section will have a very impressive and colorful array of entries, providing new and innovative competitions for all the family including some novel displays for local schools and the Young Farmers’ Clubs.

New for 2014 is a special prize to be awarded to the Women’s Institute, whose members obtain the most points in the Horticulture and Home Industries section of the Show.

Classes include Decorative and Floral Art, Flowers and Pot Plants, Vegetables and Fruit. Home Industries categories include Home Made Preserves, Home Made Wine, Eggs, Baking, Work, Craft, Young Farmers Craft and Photography. A new section for 2014 includes Honey.

The main sponsorer for Home Industries is Tesco Extra in Antrim.

Children’s sections, and Primary School Sections are available for 2014 along with a Junior Horticulture Section.

The YFCU will be holding the Final of the Build It Competition at Antrim Show. The finalist clubs are Bleary, Moneyrea, Straid, Coleraine and Dery Valley YFC. For the final, the teams will be challenged to build a windmill.

The YFCU Tag Rugby Final will also be held at Antrim Show (using Allen Park’s facilities) as well as the YFC County Competition Day (in the same arena after the Build It Final).

Ritchie Remo will also be providing live musical entertainment alongside the Young Farmers’ Clubs competing in the excitement and noise stakes.

A number of novelty events are planned including the Children’s Pet Show and a new Rabbit Show along with the usual array of Trade Stands, outdoor catering, craft stalls and amusements.
