Local man, Shea Smyth solved his unemployment problem by starting his own business, Able Plumbing and Heating with the help of Antrim Enterprise Agency.
A time served plumber with 12 years’ experience, Shea found himself unemployed and at a crossroads as to what to do next.
He signed up to the Steps to Work Self Employment option at his local Jobs and Benefits office and undertook the Invest NI Regional Start programme through the enterprise centre.
Throughout these two packages of support; enterprise centre staff assisted Shea with developing a business plan and then guided him for six months as he tried out self-employment under the test trading element of Steps to Work.
“The Invest NI regional start programme is a great avenue for individuals looking at self employment as we help take their ideas and research and formulate a business plan for them to use as a blue print in the early stages of their business,” said Kerry McClintock, Business Development Officer with Antrim Enterprise Agency.
She added: “We are delighted that Shea has since entered independent self-employment.”
Shea commented: “Having decided to go down the self employment route, I haven’t looked back. On a personal level, feeling better about myself and the one to one support I received from the enterprise agency really helped me in the decision making process.
“I am just looking forward to a harsh winter with lots of seized boilers and burst pipes!”
