ANTRIM councillor Trevor Clarke has welcomed changes to the rates system which will now provide a revised allowance of domestic rates for disabled people.
The local MLA said that the revisions to the rates also provides a further rate relief scheme giving lone pensioners a 20 per cent reduction in the rates bill for persons aged 70, or over who live alone.

Furthermore, he said, this allowance is not means tested and therefore like most other savings available does not depend on income or savings so the information is not required when an individual makes an application.

"My aim is to try and promote the new lone pensioner allowance, to ensure that all those who are eligible are receiving this substantial reduction," mr Clarke said.

He added: "The take up rate is currently under 40 per cent which is quite low, though understandable due to how recent the scheme is and perhaps also people not being fully clear of the stipulations.

"For further advice or information regarding applying for this please feel free to contact my office at 1 Lough Road, Antrim or call on 944 63273.”
