THE Dunadry Hotel played host to the now-annual Antrim Community Excellence Awards, last week, with the pride of Antrim being rewarded for their community efforts.
Hosted by local TV celebrity Gerry Kelly, the audience at the awards was left humbled by the many stories of true community spirit by the awards winners.

Tears mingled with laughter as award-winners modestly told of the work they do that makes a difference to so many people's lives.

Even host Gerry Kelly was left speechless at times, remarking on what a celebration of achievements the awards were, and commenting that it was something other town across Northern Ireland could learn from.

"I've been completely bowled over by how many people in the local community 'do their bit' without the recognition they deserve," Gerry said.

He added: "These awards clearly give these people the recognition they deserve.

"I'll certainly be taking this back to my home town in County Down as I think this is something other towns could and should emulate and learn from Antrim."

Among the award categories were Good Neighbour, Champion, Personal Achievement, Individual Volunteer, Community/Voluntar y Group, Environment, Business, Culture, Arts & Sports and the Mayor's Outstanding Achievement award.

Sponsored by firmus energy for the second year, the company's director, Mark Prentice, said the company shared similar values with the awards.

"We pride ourselves on going the extra mile and these nominees and award winners are all about groups and individuals who go the extra mile," Mr Prentice said.

Praising the award winners and nominees, Mayor of Antrim, Councillor Adrian Cochrane-Watson, said the awards were the council's way of recognising those individuals, groups, businesses or organisation that have significantly improved the quality of life of the people of the borough of Antrim.

"The winners completely deserve their awards for the signficant contribution they have made to the borough," Cllr. Watson said.

Adding his thanks to sponsors firmus energy, and to the Dunadry Hotel for hosting the event, Cllr. Watson also thanked Antrim Grammar School's String Quartet and local band The Rapparees for providing entertainment throughout the evening. He also thanked Focus AV, Darren Parker of MADD, Gerry Kelly for hosting the event, and council staff, particularly Elish Martin and Melanie Moore, for helping to organise the event.

Good Neighbour - Jean Sinnamon. Jean was described as a "shining star" and a good friend to those who live around her. An active member of the local Over 50s club and Mothers' Union, despite not enjoying the best of health, Jean looks out for her neighbours, taking them shopping, to bingo, and regularly visiting the sick and lonely.

Champion - Seamus Davis. Seamus is well known throughout the community for his work within the Springfarm estate, as well as his involvement with Antrim District Policing Partnership, Antrim Community Forum and Antrim Borough Safety Partnership.
