LOANENDS Primary School celebrates its centenary year this year and many activities have been planned to mark the special occasion.
A Centenary Dinner will be held in the Templeton Hotel on October 10, but the celebrations begin with a fun day at the end of June for the pupils.

An exhibition last week, 'Celebration a Century', was also unveiled at the school to mark the school's 100 years.

The school started in the most modest form as a 'Hedge School', developing to the Public Elementary School being built beside Loanends Presbyterian Church by the Rev. William Salmond in 1879.

In 1908 the 'new' school building was constructed several hundred yards from the church on the Sevenmile Straight.

The school grew from strength to strength over the next decades under several principals, including Mr. E. Logan (1938-1980), Miss Jean Fisher (1980-1991), and more recently Mrs. Deirdre Ferguson who held the post of principal from 1991 until 2007.

Newly appointed principal Mrs Linda Armour is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as Loanends Primary School embarks on its second century.
