PARHALL College has raised a staggering £1,890 for a local children's charity by holding a sponsored reading week.
Year 8 and 9 pupils presented the cheque to the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children after completing the Read On programme.

The central focus of 'Read On' is to promote reading for pleasure, whilst raising valuable funds to support local chi
ldren with cancer, and pupils at the Antrim school enjoyed the opportunity to read the books they enjoy during English class.

Mr Malachy McGarry, Head of English, said: "Parkhall College has embedded a strong reading culture amongst its pupils and the teaching staff is committed to encouraging pupils to develop a real passion for literature by encouraging them to read a range of books and participation in Readon provides the ideal motivation.

"I am delighted by the dedication shown by all our pupils who participated in this event. They were enthusiastic to read as much as they could to help the charity and the fantastic amount raised is a tribute to their hard work."

At the presentation, Rachel Burgoyne, Schools Fundraiser for the charity, added: "I would just like to take this opportunity to thank the school, its pupils and their families for the invaluable support they have provided to local children and teenagers who are living with cancer."

Two children a week are diagnosed with cancer in Northern Ireland. Monies raised from Readon will provide support to these children and their families.
